Newborn Screening Test in the Philippines

Even with the advancement in technology we are having today, many are still hesitant to undergo their newborn babies a “Newborn Screening Test”.

What is Newborn Screening Test?

Newborn screening test is a test done right after the baby is born up to three days.

Importance of Newborn Screening Test

Newborn screening is done to screen genetically inherited metabolic disorders. These metabolic disorders could affect negatively to the child if not detected early and intervention is not given. To screen for newborn test is to know what errors in metabolism a child has so an appropriate intervention and management will be done to correct; so to provide quality life to the child as he grows.

Newborn Screening Tests in the Philippines

In the country – Philippines, by far, there are only five (5) errors in metabolism that are screened.

  1. Congenital Hypothyroidism
  2. Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
  3. Phenylketonuria
  4. Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency
  5. Galactosemia

But the Department of Health (DOH) is now starting to implement the sixth (6th) disorder to include, Mapple Syrup Urine Disease.

    I gave birth in the Davao and its good thing they do newbown screening nowadays:) Early detection of these diseases really help parents and care providers what to do when it happens.
